The first article discusses the announcement by SSAB, a Swedish #steel company, that it has produced the world’s first fossil-free steel using hydrogen instead of coking coal. The process, called HYBRIT, emits only water vapor instead of carbon dioxide. This achievement is a significant step towards decarbonizing the #steelindustry and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The second article reports that Thyssenkrupp Steel, a German steel company, has awarded a contract worth billions of euros to SMS group for the construction of a direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Germany. The new plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons of high-quality, low-emission steel and is part of Thyssenkrupp’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. The direct reduction process uses natural gas to produce iron, which emits less CO2 than traditional #steelmaking methods. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2025
